All of my books have started with a setting in need of both characters and a story. The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage not only begged for fun and interesting characters, but it was the perfect setting for a murder mystery. We took a trip up to the area to see if it was everything I expected it to be. The area exceeded my expectations.
It is every bit as remote as Jordan describes to Sheriff Reid. It is a perfect place for my little community of Waterdance. I sincerely enjoyed my time with these characters and this story. I hope you will too.
**I took the pictures of the flowage with my camera. The pictures of the turtles, loons, campsites with the fires, and the WDNR boat are from stock images on the internet. The map of the flowage is from the Wisconsin DNR webiste. If you'd like a closer look.... https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/lands/turtleflambeau/maps/
Thank you for reading my words.

If you squint, you can see some loons in the water
A camping island in the foreground and another right behind it.
Most of the shoreline is natural forest. Very little of the flowage is developed.
A boat beached on one of the islands. Is it teathered? Would it stay in the storm?
There are several small islands, too small for camping. Imaging the boat chase between these jutted rocks!!
This is where Jordan and Hanna walked along the river bank to get to Jordan's picnic paradise.
Jordan spent all afternoon and night searching campsites
Then, she finds one with no boat... no camper... and a cooler low on ice.
Can't you just see Jordan and Hanna walking back to the lodge after finding the car in the woods?
Or, can you imagine Jordan pulling up behind the bar to help Hanna track the missing kayaker?
Here's the ramp at Fisherman's Landing Boat Launch, where Hanna called out for Jordan to wait
And this is the building that Hanna parked behind at the Fisherman's Landing to help with the search.
Another shot of Fisherman's Landing Boat Launch
Isn't this just the best setting for a mystery??
The snapping turtle played a big role in Waterlogged.
I bet Jordan wished she'd had a partner a time or two.
Sometimes, when people clear up their shorlines, they don't rake it out of the water, so it blows with the wind. That's percisely what I found when I took the camera out looking for the perfect setting for a cover photo. That's when I had my Ah-Ha moment and convinced my wife to do some modeling. She's such a good sport. She crouched down in the water and held her arm just so. Thus... the perfect cover for Waterlogged! As you can see in the picture, she was very much alive for the photo. Tammy, one of the graphics artist's for Bold Strokes Books did an incredible job tinting it just right.
Every book I write has a playlist. This is the playlist for Waterlogged. Sharika's cover of Back in Black is in this list... give it a listen! <3
